Do you need a website if you already have a Facebook page?

A lot of local businesses run entirely off Booksy, Vagaro, Yelp or Facebook. Here is when that is fine and when it quietly costs you work.

Short answer, sometimes no. A lot of small operators run their whole business off a Booksy page or a Facebook page and do perfectly well, so I am not going to tell you that you are doing it wrong.

Here is when it stops working though, because it does stop working, and it usually happens quietly enough that you do not notice.

When somebody searches for you by name

This is the one that costs you. A customer gets your name from a friend, types it into Google, and finds a booking platform page with your name on it. Or a Yelp listing. Or three of those and no way to tell which is really you.

That person was already sold. They were looking for you specifically and they still had to work out whether they had found the right business.

When the platform decides to compete with you

Your Booksy page ranks for your name, and Booksy owns it. Your Yelp listing ranks for your trade, and Yelp puts three competitors underneath it with "sponsored" next to their names. Those platforms are not on your side, they are on their side, and their side involves showing your customer other options.

A page you own does not do that.

When you want to be found by people who do not know your name yet

This is the bigger one long term. A booking profile can rank for you. It very rarely ranks for "mobile dog groomer in Newport" or "handyman near Delhi Township", because it does not have a page about that and it never will.

Owning a page for each thing you do and each area you cover is how you get found by people who have never heard of you, and no platform is going to do that for you.

What you actually need, which is less than you think

You do not need a big site. For most one person operations five pages does it:

A home page that says what you do and where. A page for each of your main services. A page for the areas you cover. Something about you. A contact page with your phone number as text and not a picture.

Underneath that it needs your city in the title of every page, your address and phone written out, and the structured data that tells Google and the AI assistants what you are. That last part is where most cheap sites fall down, and it is the part that decides whether an assistant can recommend you.

Keep the platform too

None of this means dropping Booksy or Facebook. Your booking system works and your customers are used to it. The website is where people find you and decide, the platform is where they book. They do different jobs.

If you want a site like that I build them starting at $900 plus $99 a month for hosting, with the search fundamentals already in it and your name on the domain, not mine. And if you would rather build it yourself, everything above is the list. Go and do it!
